Is it OK to join two electrical wires of different size ie cooker cable to .mm cable?

Is it OK to join two electrical wires of different size ie cooker cable to .mm cable?
It would make things easier if I can join an existing cooker cable to a slightly smaller .mm cable that goes from my house to my studio in the garden. I will get everthing checked by a qualified friend at some stage. would this set up be OK?
